On September 22, 2011, the JCA team offered a conference about Accounting and Human Resourse named: “¿Cuál es el rol del Contador y el Personal de Recursos Humanos en la Industria de la Tecnología?”.

The conference was given by Damaris De Jesus, Ph.D. - Human Resources Department Director and Rafael Richard Gonzalez, CPA- Accounting Manager. The college students enjoyed listening about JC Automation, what are the roles of these professions?, what are the responsibilities? and as part of the conference we took students resumes for possible job opportunities.

The activity was organized by:

We want to congratulate Denidsa. Her team was selected to the final round of the 2011 Puerto Rico Society of CPA’s Accounting Competition. The competition co-sponsored by the American Institute of CPAs (AICPA) and by the Colegio de Contadores Publicos Autorizados de Puerto Rico (CCPA) challenge the students to prepare and defend a business proposal on the matter of sustainability to a real client.

Denidsa as team Captain has shown tremendous leadership skills contributing to her team success. That is a trait that we at JC Automation have in high regard. Denidsa is an outstanding undergraduate student at the University of Puerto Rico, Humacao Campus. She is working with our company through the Juve-Empleo Program. Her commitment to high professional work is very valuable to us.

We wish her success and the best of luck in the final round of the competition and we know she will do her best to lead her team to victory.

“Way back when I was first considering what to do in my career, I stumbled onto computers and what they were capable of. In my young mind, I thought, ‘This is going to dominate the world, so I want to be a part of it when it finally happens,’” laughed Juan Sénquiz, founder & general manager of JC AUTOMATION (JCA).

“Years passed and I realized I had a knack for technical writing,” Sénquiz continued. “It was for a project that took me two weeks to install, but one year to write the documents explaining how it worked. Not a lot of people appreciate this process, but for me it just clicked. I then decided to start working in information technology and regulatory compliance by establishing JC AUTOMATION.”

This year, the PRMA is recognizing Sénquiz as Executive of the Year in the central-eastern region, something the entrepreneur isn’t taking lightly.

“It is a great honor to be recognized by my peers and not just some random committee,” Sénquiz said. “This particular award has a lot of value for us and fills us with great pride.”

As previously reported by CARIBBEAN BUSINESS (CB Dec. 9, 2010), the company has implemented a call center in its Las Piedras facility that currently provides help-desk services locally and abroad. JCA also has subsidiaries in New Jersey and California.

JCA specializes in the life-sciences sector, which typically covers biotechnology industries, pharmaceuticals and medical-device manufacturers. The company provides information-technology (IT) management services, virtualization, project management and regulatory-compliance services. Clients include such giants as Johnson & Johnson, Danaher, Novartis and, more recently, Bosch.

“Our newest project is the virtualization of a manufacturing server in Bosch’s manufacturing site in Brazil,” Sénquiz said. “A pilot already was implemented and the final rollout will be taking place near the end of April. This project will be a big success.”

Sénquiz said hardware companies have advanced in great strides, at times leaving software companies behind. As a result, today’s computers are capable of much more than current software is equipped to deliver. Virtualization is an innovative process that closes this gap, and few companies in Puerto Rico actually offer it.

Using trains as analogies for servers, Sénquiz explains how virtualization works: “If you have one train transporting just one passenger, then overhead costs are through the roof,” he said. “If, however, it were possible to compress one whole train to occupy the space of one train seat, then operations would become more cost-effective and, generally, more productive.”

This is what virtualization entails—using software to compress servers to fit into one. This represents significant savings on multiple levels.

“The complexity of managing just one server, instead of 10, is self-explanatory, and so is the savings on energy costs, maintenance and spare parts for the server,” Sénquiz said.

JCA looks to capitalize on its expertise to continue taking these services all over the world, while it serves a growing number of Puerto Rican professionals who want to stay on the island, but also want to work on projects of a global magnitude.

“I really want to thank my team for the outstanding commitment shown to our customers: They truly are the key for our success. I also want to thank my peers in the central-eastern region for choosing me for this honor,” Sénquiz said. “It was completely unexpected, but greatly appreciated, and it definitely motivates us to continue with our strategies to make possible our mission of offering our services on a global scale.”

El miércoles 30 de marzo se llevó a cabo la actividad de premiacion a líderes industriales del area Centro Oriental por parte de la Asoc de Industriales de Puerto Rico. Las personas reconocidas fueron:

A la actividad asistieron numerosos estudiantes, llenando el salón-teatro casi totalmente. La actividad comenzó con la presentación de los distinquidos homenajeados seguido por una corta charla por parte de cada uno sobre su procedencia, estudios, cómo se desarrollaron en la industria, cómo fueron trabajando para lograr sus metas, retos que se encontraron en el camino.

Algo que tienen en común todos los homenajeados es la visión de aprovechar las oportunidades, mantenerse siempre aprendiendo y al día en los avances de sus respectivas industrias, ser competitivos, disciplinados y hacer siempre un trabajo bién hecho y de calidad.

Innovation the key for the future

Innovation is the key for the future, we need to be able to come up with new ideas and help our new generations to think out of the box. As part of this article we are including a robot that the creator's team called W.I.L.M.A who recently was developed as part of the Puerto Rico Polytechnic University Engineering Design class by a group of students including one of our own team Juan G. Senquiz. The idea was to introduce the students to the engineering design concepts and they came up with this version who won in their contest the first price in the design category because of their out of the box design. Lets hope this small group of students that also included Joanisel Santos, Hector Martir, Enrique Cintron, Orlando Salgado, Pedro Tejada, Jesus Cordero and Alejandro Suero continue on their quest of adding value to our island through the development of more innovative ideas.

Computer Imaging with Steroids

JC Automation has developed the right methodology to simplify the management of imaging for our clients. To provide some background, imaging is the process used to backup a complete system including operating system (Windows, Linux, etc.), drivers and applications installed on a desktop or laptop computer. This technology is used to deploy computers because it helps the distribution of a consistent configuration across the whole network. Once a configuration is created that meets the customer requirements the image is stored and treated as a master. This master is then replicated to other computers (of the same brand and model) to distribute a consistent configuration based on the designated master. This is a great process with the only limitation that you need one master image per computer model due to the differences in the drivers among the computer models or brands. Keeping track of multiple master images have several challenges such as updates, availability, storage, identification among others that if not managed correctly can lead to inconsistent computers being deployed to your environment triggering unnecessary help desk calls and frustration for the users.

JC Automation has tackled the multiple imaging requirements and has come up with a solution. The process is called universal image. This process allows the creation of a single image with all your business applications and the restoration of the image to any type of computer regardless of the models or even the computer brand. This means that the master image is a true master, a universal image. The organization no longer has to deal with the complexity of managing multiple images for various computer models at the site or create a new image for every computer model (or brand). Without doubt this process gives added flexibility, agility and standarizationto the customers during the deployment of computers.

In order to reinforce our infrastructure platform JC Automation has installed a new fiber optic to expand our current communication capabilities. This fiber in addition to the inverter battery backup systems recently installed at our offices provide a stronger foundation that aligns with our export service strategy. JC Automation currently exports IT Service Desk, Systems Engineering, Compliance and Project Management services from our corporate office in Las Piedras to our customers in the USA and Europe. This infrastructure will allow us to expand those offerings while at the same time will provide a solid and scalable foundation for the future.

Tecnología ambiental patentada por un boricua tiene buena acogida en el Oriente Medio

Una tecnología inventada por un boricua está ofreciendo una solución creativa a la acumulación de neumáticos desechados en Oriente Medio. Lo irónico es que Puerto Rico tiene el mismo problema, pero Sofscape no ha logrado ser profeta en su tierra.

José Valentín, presidente de Sofscape, comenzó en el 1998 a desarrollar una máquina que convierte neumáticos triturados en coloridos adoquines. En el 2006 instaló la tecnología ya terminada y comenzó la producción en una fábrica en Vega Baja.

Cinco consejos para las "computadoras lentas"

Es usual que luego de cierto tiempo de uso (sobre todo en los sistemas operativos pasados) las computadoras comiencen a ponerse lenta, sin razón obvia aparente. Si notas que tu computadora se esta poniendo lenta verifica estas 5 posibilidades antes de que la tires a la basura o decidas comprar una nueva:

I. Desinstale programas que no estes usando. Dele un vistazo a la lista de programas que tienes instalado en la computadora en la pantalla de "Añadir y Remover Programas". Si vez algun programa que no has usado en los ultimos 3 meses o sabes que no vas a usar, bórralo. Razones para removerlo(s); a) porque esta ocupando espacio, b) puede estar corriendo en memoria o c) no lo estas usando...punto. Si te preocupa desinstalarlo porque piensas que podrías necesitar del programa en algún momento futuro, mantén una copia del archivo de instalación por si acaso.

II. Verifique cuales programas están empezando automáticamente con Windows. Algunos programas tipo "instant messaging", Acrobat Reader, Real Player, Quicktime, iTunes, MS Office, etc. empiezan a "correr" automáticamente en cuanto se enciende la computadora y pueden poner tu computadora lenta. Verifica las opciones de los distintos programas para "apagar la función" que hace que empiece automáticamente.

III. Defragmentar el disco duro y mantenerlo defragmentado. Esto, en otras palabras, ayuda al sistema operativo encontrar los archivos mas rápido. Esta herramienta se encuentra en la pantalla de Manejo de la Computadora (right mouse click on My Computer > Manage > Disk Defragmenter).

IV. Verificar que la computadora no tenga "spyware" o "malware" ya que son programas que ocupan espacio en memoria (RAM; memoria volatil) y corren procesos para monitorear tus hábitos de websites que visitas. Estos programas también se utilizan para robarte información de la computadora.

V. Por ultimo, el famoso "upgrade" de memoria RAM. Hay que ser realista, no piense que instalándole 4GB de RAM a una computadora con mas de 5 años va a lograr poner a correr la computadora como una computadora nueva que salio el otro día con "los ultimos muñequitos". Añadir más memoria ayuda en darle "más espacio virtual" a la computadora para que los programas trabajen desde la memoria RAM (que es rápido) y no desde el disco duro (que es lento). La ayuda que esto ofrece a la maquina (para agilizarla) también depende de la cantidad de programas que se use a la vez o los programas que empiezen con el sistema operativo automaticamente.
